How much green do you have at hand?
The presence of nature in cities improves health and livability.
According to the European Environment Agency, contact with urban greenery โ parks, gardens, green spaces for rest and physical activity โ reduces stress, improves physical and mental well-being and mitigates urban temperatures by reducing the heat island effect.
But not everyone in Europe has the same access to green spaces.
In this context, where does the city of Palermo stand?
What kind of access do Palermo residents have to urban green spaces?
Are there differences between neighborhoods that translate into social inequalities and missed health benefits?
Palermo 3-30-300 is a small independent research project created to spread awareness about urban green space availability, address by address, based on an international rule that helps us design more livable, cool and sustainable cities.
By entering your address we can calculate the nearest green spaces and the situation in your neighborhood.
Your data is used exclusively for analysis and is not stored.
This principle, developed by Cecil Konijnendijk, explains the importance of bringing nature into neighborhoods, streets and right in front of our homes, to reap its numerous benefits. It provides clear guiding criteria for the minimum provision of trees in our urban communities, establishing the following three minimum requirements:
This study inverts the order, starting from the 300-meter criterion: the metersc that best measures equity in public green access for every citizen.
Everyone should have access to a high-quality, publicly accessible green space, no more than 300 meters away on foot or by bicycle, for recreational activities and promoting healthier lifestyles.
Proximity to green spaces improves physical health by encouraging daily movement and promotes mental well-being by reducing stress and anxiety. Green spaces are also places for community gathering and socializing and help mitigate urban heat islands.

This tool verifies the third rule: are you within 300 meters of a green space?
This data shows how much of Palermo's population lives within 300 meters of a public green space.
